North Island Championship 2009

Over Easter the North Island Championship was held in Wellington and several members of ACC entered. The total field was 31 players in a single 8 round swiss with a 90m+30s time control.

The event was quite strong with 12 players rated over 2000 and only 6 players (3 from ACC) under 1500. Due to the odd number of entrants several ACC players got 1 point byes.

Results for ACC players were:

• Mike Steadman came 3rd overall on 6 points
• Nathan Goodhue came 5th equal and 1st equal in “B” grade with 5 points
• Simon Lyall was 14th equal on 4 points
• Neil Cruden was 21st equal on 3.5 points
• Han Gao was 26th equal on 3 points
• Winston Yao was 29th on 2.5 points

North Island Rapid 2009 – Short Report

On Sunday the 5th of April the North Island Rapid Championship was held in Hamilton. This year it is a separate event from the North Island Championship which is being held the following weekend in Wellington.

The tournament was arranged as a single 6 round 25′+5″ event with 36 players plus a separate event for junior (under 1400 rating and under 14 years old). The venue was a very nice St Paul’s Collegiate School.

ACC regulars traveling down included: Ewen Green, Richard Taylor, Edward Tanoi, Don Eade, Neil Cruden, Hans Gao, Phillip Mukkattu and Simon Lyall.

The results were Paul Garbett, Bob Smith and Noel Picnic tied for first place. ACC winners were Don Eade who was first equal in the 2nd grade while Phillip Mukkattu shared a prize for 1st in the 3rd grade.

March Weekender Results

Over 3 days between Friday 27th and Sunday the 29th of March nearly 50 players participated in the two weekender competitions. Both events were six rounds of standard time control.

Open ( Nationally and FIDE rated )

Winner: Bob Smith  5/6
2nd equal: John MacDonald and Mike Steadman 4/6
Grade prize: Edward Lee

Under-1700 ( Nationally rated )

Winner: Hans Gao  5/6
Second equal: Bob Mitchell, Leo Zhu and William Li 4½/6
Grade Prizes: Simon Lyall and Sean Tang
